When I started researching for this post, I was stunned by how beautiful some of the handcrafted crochet hooks available to buy are. They are pieces of art in their own right, crafted by crafters for crafters.
However, what I hadn’t realised was how unique the individuals behind these items are as well. As unique and lovely as the hooks themselves. I do love to be reminded about how special our Worldwide crafting community is.
Here are some of my favourite hooks and a bit about the wonderful people who make them.
The hooks he produces are without question works of art in their own right. He auctions each of his hooks via email and publishes the latest bids on his webpage.
I have chosen to feature his original Egg Hook, with a bulbous handle that fits like an egg in the palm of the hand, a feature that is of great benefit to many crocheters with hand issues. Aren’t they fabulous? If you have ever considered whittling your own hook? Head over to his site as he has instructions showing how he goes about it.
Polymer Clay Shed is based in the United States but ships Worldwide. They make beautiful polymer clay covered crochet hooks. The Clay is sanded and polished to give a lovely smooth feel whilst crafting. The designs go through the polymer clay which means that the picture will not rub off with regular use.
I have chosen to feature their gorgeous unicorn hooks which are moulded around a Susan Bates hook in any size from B-N. They cost £9.90 each.
Why not visit the lovely Polymer Clay Shed blog and take in more of their gorgeous designs.
Hen Pecked Hooks is a husband and wife team based in the States. They make hand-turned custom made wooden crochet hooks, yarn bowls and other crochet related items. Hen Pecks Hooks take great care and pride in using responsibly sourced materials and believe all buyers have the right to know the origin of the wood in the products they buy.
The hook I have chosen to feature is their hand-turned Apples – SpectraPly. The colours just pop and make this hook look good enough to eat. It is available in either Ergonomic Palmholder or the Fat Bottom design. It costs £10.61 and they ship Worldwide.
Why not pop over to their Facebook page and say hello.
How adorable are these polymer clay kitty hooks by The Clay Bean Co. They are so cute and very on trend with the current love for all things ‘Kawaii’ (cute in Japanese). They cost £32 for the set of four sized G,H,I and J.
Unraveled Ewe is a husband and wife team that turns wooden hooks and needles. They are based in the States but ship Worldwide.
The hooks that I have chosen to feature are these hand turned exotic wood Crochet Hooks. They are shaped differently than traditional crochet hooks. Instead of being long and slender, they are approximately 5.75 inches long and made with contoured handles that fit nicely in the hand. The larger handles also relieve stress on the hand and wrist when crocheting for an extended length of time. They cost £17.79 and can be engraved.
Maryjosepha is based in and ships within the United States. She started making her own hooks after many hours of working with a tiny hook would lead to a terrible pain in her shoulder. She wrapped her hooks in clay, making a larger “handle” to hold on to. She felt instant relief from pain when crocheting. After 3 years ago with no pain, she thought others could benefit from the ergonomic shape, so opened her own Etsy shop and started to sell her beautiful hooks.
The hooks I have chosen to feature is this set of three called ‘Purple Passion’. You can order them in any size from D to K. Each hook is unique and compliments the next. They cost £36.95 for a set of three hooks and matching stitch markers.
Rparishwoodworks has been making furniture, pens, crochet hooks and many other items from wood and other materials for the last 15 years.
The hook I have chosen to feature comes with two colourful charms just right for summer crocheting– a lime green bikini and bright pink sunglasses. Green and pink beads that showcase the wood colours and the charms complete this fun design. It is hand-turned using dyed, laminated hardwood. It has been resin-impregnated, then bonded and compressed to form a dense material.
This hardwood is a blend of bright pink with darker pink highlights and is called shocking pink hardwood. It costs £28.46 and can be shipped Worldwide.
