What’s on My Shelf #1 – Crochet Books

July 16, 2017 by Amy Le Pelley 71 Comments

Welcome to my new Series ‘What’s On My Shelf’.  I have a lot (I mean it), a lot of craft related books.  I have been packing for the move and I uncovered some really loved and well used ones and I thought I would share a few of my favourite crochet books with you.  I will share some others over the next few weeks.

The 4 books I am sharing with you today, are some of the first crochet books I bought when I taught myself to crochet 8 years ago.  If you follow me, you may remember that I taught myself to crochet when I was expecting my first baby.  I had that ‘new mum to be’ terror that she was going to be born, turn to me and say ‘so what have you done with your life so far?’…. and it TERRIFIED me!  So I rationally (for a heavily pregnant women) thought maybe if I teach myself to crochet, this baby will know I am in fact a real life grown up and not just playing house.  I don’t think it worked, but I fell in love with the craft and I think some of it must have rubbed off in the womb as Twinkle loves to crochet as well.

Crochet

The Happy Hooker – Debbie Stoller

If you crochet and haven’t yet been introduced to Debbie Stoller, you need this book!  Written in the author’s cheeky style it is full of inspirational tips and techniques.  With fabulous modern designs from Pom Pom Capelet to an Anarchy Irony Hat.  Other books by this author include:

Son of a Stitch and Bitch

The Encyclopedia of Crochet Techniques – Jan Eaton

This encyclopedia of crochet stitches and techniques was the first crochet book I ever bought and is so easy to follow.  It shows how to form stitches with photographs, illustrations and symbol charts.  If you are struggling to get your head around a tricky stitch, or the crochet terminology (which can sometimes feel like a language of its own) then this is a perfect book for you.  It is currently great value because they have released a newer addition.

The New Encyclopedia of Crochet Techniques

Crochet Book

Cute and Easy Crochet – Nicki Trench

Nicki Trench is a crochet teacher and author with over 20 years experience. She has written a lot of books and I really love this little book with 35 adorable and traditional projects for the home. I particularly love her crocheted Pavlova which is definitely on my list of things to make. Other books by this author include:

Geek Chic Crochet

Crochet Book

Crochet Bouquet – Suzann Thompson

This book is filled to the brim with gorgeous crochet flower and leaf patterns. Suzann Thompson also shows how to use these flowers to embellish clothes and other household items. The instructions are really clear and easy to follow. I have used these patterns to decorate gifts and headbands for the children. Other books by this author include:

Cute Crochet World

My favorite craft book is the Knitter’s Handbook. I knit more than I crochet so I refer to this book more.

My favorite is my knitting encyclopedia of stitches. I do crochet some but I need to improve my knowledge. I think the encyclopedia of crochet stitches would be a great idea. I have crocheted a baby blanket for my grandchild and would like to do some more. Thanks for the chance.

I don’t think I have a favourite, but at the moment I am trying to learn cake decorating so have a couple of books on learning the basics. I also have a few cross-stitch books I come back to again & again such as wild flowers in cross stitch & story book favourites in cross stitch.
